Generate from a form or a spreadsheet
The templates your account keeps in the Company Portal (API templates, and templates that read an Excel workbook, a SharePoint list, a Dataverse table or a Google sheet) can make documents right in the portal, without calling the document API. Type one document’s data in a form, or upload a CSV or Excel file and get a document for each row.
This page is for accounts that sign in with Microsoft, Google or an email address. Lark Base templates are generated from the AutomaDoc extension in your Base.
Open the Generate page
Section titled “Open the Generate page”- Open Templates in the Company Portal.
- In the template’s row menu, click Generate. On a template’s own page, the Generate button does the same.
The template needs a file first. If it has none, upload one or build it with the template designer.
Fill in a form
Section titled “Fill in a form”Click Fill in a form. There is one box per field of the template, named as in the template: Customer_name fills {Customer_name}, and Customer.Email fills the Email field of a linked record.
- A picture field takes an https link to the picture on a public website.
- A list the template repeats, such as
{#Items}…{/Items}, is a table: one row per line, one column per field of the line. Add a line adds a row; the bin removes one. Empty rows are left out.
Click Make the document.
Upload a CSV or Excel file
Section titled “Upload a CSV or Excel file”Click Upload a file, then Choose a CSV or Excel file. The file is read in your browser; only the data of each document is sent.
- One row makes one document. The first row holds the column names.
- Each column fills the field with the same name. The name is read the way AutomaDoc names every field: spaces and punctuation become
_, so a columnInvoice No.fills{Invoice_No_}, andCustomer.Namefills a linked record’s field. Upper and lower case do not matter here. The Columns and fields table shows what each column fills; change any of them under Fills, or choose Not used. Fields that no column fills are listed, and stay empty. - Preview of the first rows shows the first documents as they will be sent.
A CSV file may use commas, semicolons or tabs between values, as Excel saves it in your language. In an Excel file, number cells arrive as numbers and date cells as dates written 2026-01-31 (with the time when the cell shows one), so the template’s number, currency and date filters format them. Text stays exactly as typed, a leading zero included. Hidden sheets are ignored.
Line items
Section titled “Line items”A list the template repeats takes its lines from another table:
- in an Excel file, another sheet named like the list (
Itemsfor{#Items}); - with CSV, another CSV file named like the list (
Items.csv), added with Add a file of line items.
Both tables need a column with the same name, such as Document key. Each line joins the document whose row has the same value in that column, in the order the lines are written. The page picks the line table and that column for you; change them under Lines from, Link column in the documents and Link column in the lines. It also says when lines match no document, and when several rows share a key (each of them then gets the same lines).
Starter files
Section titled “Starter files”Excel starter file and CSV starter file download a file with a column for each field of the template, and a sheet (or a CSV file) for each list with the Document key column already in place. Fill it in and upload it as it is.
One document from many rows
Section titled “One document from many rows”For a template that makes one document from many records (a list, a page per record, or labels), all the rows of the file make one document, each row one record, up to 500 records. The form makes a document from one record.
What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”Documents made here are yours, counted as documents you generate yourself: your seat covers them, or the free monthly allowance and then your document packs. They never use the Business automation allowance.
Before you start, the page says how many documents the run makes and how many you have left this month, packs included. When there are too few, it says so and does not start; when there are none left, it shows the same message as everywhere else, with a link to Billing for admins.
Follow the run
Section titled “Follow the run”A large file is sent in batches of up to 50 documents. On the Free plan the batches go a few a minute, and the page waits between them by itself.
Every row shows its progress, then a Download link, or the reason it failed. When the run is over:
- Download all (.zip) downloads every finished document in one zip file;
- Retry, followed by the number of failed rows, sends those rows again;
- Make more documents goes back to the form or the file.
You can Stop a run: the rows not sent yet are listed as failed, ready for a retry.
The documents are also listed under Documents, where their source is Generate page. The Generate page does not send documents for signature.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- 10,000 rows per file.
- 50 pictures per document, as https links to public websites.
- 500 records in one combined document.
