Troubleshooting & FAQ

Solutions to common issues and frequently asked questions.

If variables show as {FieldName} in the output:

  • Check the field name matches exactly (case-sensitive).
  • Use the Variables page to copy the exact syntax.
  • Remove any extra spaces inside the braces.
  • Verify the file is .docx format (not .doc).
  • Keep the file under 10 MB — very large templates can fail to upload.
  • Use Microsoft Word to create templates. WPS Office and others may cause formatting issues.
  • Check the template for invalid placeholders.
  • Verify the record has the required data.
  • Simplify the template and test incrementally.

If you see [Object object] instead of actual values:

  • Confirm the placeholder name matches exactly in the Variables page.
  • For linked records, use dot notation: {Company.Name}, not {Company}.
  • For multi-link fields, use loop syntax: {#Items}...{/Items}.

Permission denied / cannot modify templates

Section titled “Permission denied / cannot modify templates”

If you see permission errors when creating or editing templates:

  • You need Editor or Full Access permission on the Lark Base, not just View permission — see Permissions.
  • Ask the Base owner to grant you Editor access.
  • Users with View-only access can still generate documents using existing templates.

Can I use images in my template?

Yes. Static images are preserved. You can also use dynamic image replacement — set the image alt text to {FieldName}. See Dynamic images.

Can I generate PDF?

Yes, PDF conversion is available on all plans. Set Output Format on the Template tab.

Can I use AutomaDoc with multiple bases?

Yes. Templates belong to the table you created them on, so each table in each base has its own set. Switch tables or bases in Lark and AutomaDoc adapts automatically.

How do I view all my templates?
